What it does
A persistent memory compression system built for Claude Code. It captures tool usage observations automatically, generates semantic summaries, and makes them available to future sessions, so Claude keeps project knowledge even after sessions end or reconnect.
How it works
It works through lifecycle hooks (SessionStart, UserPromptSubmit, PreToolUse, PostToolUse, Stop, SessionEnd) that capture observations into a local SQLite database, a worker service with a web viewer and search endpoints managed by Bun, and a mem-search skill that retrieves relevant context with progressive disclosure. Search is a hybrid of Chroma semantic search and keyword search, in three layers: compact index, timeline, then full details only for filtered IDs.
How to use it
Install with
npx claude-mem install
then restart Claude Code; previous session context appears automatically.
The installer sets everything up first, then asks you to sign in to claude-mem in your browser with an email magic link. To skip sign-in, pass an explicit provider flag or run in a non-interactive shell.
For other hosts, use a host flag (for example
npx claude-mem install --ide opencode
) or the plugin marketplace (

Key points
Signing in provisions a memory key and unlocks the claude-mem observer with a 30-day free trial; after it ends, memory falls back to your Anthropic plan unless you subscribe.
Do not install with plain npm: the README warns
npm install -g claude-mem
installs only the SDK and library, not the plugin hooks or worker service.
